Stray Kids’ Accused of Copying BTS in New Album Mashup Release

On December 6, a mashup video of the songs in Stray Kids’ upcoming album “HOP” was released, drawing attention.

Unfortunately, shortly after the video was published, several netizens alleged that a portion of the song “Walkin on Water” sounded similar to the flow of a verse of BTS’s V in BTS’s old track “Jump”. This led to a huge debate on online forums.

For starters, several fans of Stray Kids pointed out that “Jump” was sampled from another song of the same name from American Hip-hop duo Kriss Kross, so the similarities may have come from the original song.

However, fans of BTS pointed out that V’s verse in BTS’s “Jump” was a unique BTS addition and not at all included in Kriss Kross’ jump, insisting that Stray Kids did copy BTS.

“The problem is… BTS sampled the original, while Stray Kids sampled BTS’s original part which wasn’t in the sampled song. The credit should be two, the original singer of ‘Jump’ and BTS members, especially Yoongi (real name of BTS’s Suga). But the problem is, they didn’t do it. So it’s a straight copycat,” a netizen said.

In response, fans of Stray Kids argued that the flow being heard was from a mash up video, so the real “Walkin on Water” may be something different.

“This is called a mashup, it is transformative and doesn’t necessarily sound like the real song, beats sampled are of fair use”, one insisted.

So far, a video comparing the two songs have surpassed 2.6 million views, whereas neither Stray Kids nor BTS’s side have spoken up regarding this situation.
